NCAA Men's Basketball Rule Change For The Year 2007 2008

NCAA Men’s Basketball Rule Change for the Year 2007-2008

There has been an extensive debate on certain changes for the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Basketball men’s division. There are studies on how much adjustments will be made regarding the three-point line. It was discussed and is approved by governing bodies that will be effective by the year 2008-2009. Not only that, there are also requirements and certain traditions that will be changed and is anticipated to be replaced by newer versions and sets of rules.

For those who are curious regarding the newly adapted three-point line marks, there would be no change in the width of the lane because the committee considered the wide extent they have to reach and the schools across the country that has to re-mark their line conjunction. This would eventually be considered but would take several years to put into regulation.

For the new three-point line being asserted as a true arc, the answer is a definite yes. It would measure for about 20ft, 9inches starting from the center of the basket. Do not fret though, because the idea of allowing an arc measuring a foot was dismissed. The committee acknowledged how expensive it would take for schools all across the country to introduce such a change.

No changes made for the free-throw lane but alignment of the players whenever a free-throw is served will be adapted at the 2008 NCAA season. The one who plays defense will now be positioned, instead of below, above the block. Markings on the court within the lane will not be moved.

One very important matter that the committee reiterated is the value of sportsmanship. These rules were made for compulsory purposes to impose to the whole crowd including all people involved in the game. Without sportsmanship as their main goal, the game will go berserk. Rules are made to be able to maximize the safety, enjoyment and potential of the athlete and student without getting hurt. This is also emphasized t the personnel, crowd and officials. Enforcement of these rules is a must.

Further adjustments regarding student-athlete uniforms were also marked. The committee became concerned on the legality of the uniforms last 2006-2007 season. They commented that uniforms serve as protection for the integrity of the player and not as a billboard wherein all you can see are the advertisements patch onto it. You can hardly see the player’s number. Instead of making it complicated, the committee made adjustments for the benefit of both the manufacturers and institutions.

Discussing uniforms, if the team uses a back panel along the shoulder, its maximum extent should not be more than 3 inches that may be horizontal or arched. This will not affect the number’s visibility without compromising the creativity in the design.

Patches made in the uniforms must only be a kept within the maximum size of 2 ¼ sq inches. Placement of single patches whether commemorative, conference or institutional can be worn at the apex of the back in their jersey.

Regarding hair control devices, anything that is put on the head, either headbands or control devices must have a single color, solid in particular, that would be not more than 2 inches in width. Hard items are prohibited.

These are only some of those are needed some attending. To know more about the different rules and regulations implemented and changed, refer to the NCAA committee actions for 2007-2008.
